China will build a bridge in Croatia with funding from the European Union. The China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) won a tender for the construction of the bridge in Peljesac, beating out an Italian-Turkish consortium and the Austrian company Strabag. The bridge will cost approximately 280 million Euros, and is the first infrastructure project funded by the EU to be built by a Chinese company. The Union will cover 85% of the project, which will take about 36 months.
The bridge will be 55 meters high and 2.6 kilometers long. It will cross the Adriatic Sea over the Mali Ston bay and allow Croatian citizens to avoid passing through the territory of Bosnia Herzegovina. Bosnia has always opposed the project.
