The decision made years ago by China to reduce coal consumption for electricity production and favor the use of liquid natural gas (LNG), makes it possible to predict that China will surpass Japan in terms of LNG consumption in a not too distant future. For the moment, Tokyo remains the leader in LNG imports, a position it has held since 2011 when the Fukushima accident took place, with the consequent stoppage of the country’s nuclear reactors. Currently, however, China is the leading importer of gas, if together with LNG we calculate the natural gas imported directly with gas pipelines (China is also the top importer of oil and coal).
The country’s relationship with Russia, as one of the essential exporters for the Chinese energy market, is well-known and consolidated. Moscow set a new record for gas production in 2017, with an output increase of 7.9% over the previous year. Many LNG export terminal projects are under construction, as the volume of gas directed towards Europe through the pipelines is increasing. Russia and the United States are competing for global leadership in the gas sector.
